CTUHR distributes farm animals, tractors in Haiyan affected areas

From May to June 2014, the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) in partnership with Tabang Sinarangan Bisayas (TSB) distributed farm animals, tractors, and seedlings in select farming communities in Eastern and Western Samar as part of a special program for the rehabilitation of areas worst hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

Carabaos were distributed to Bgy. Antol in the town of Calbiga, Western Samar, while hand tractors and rice seeds were given to Bgy. Balingasag in Catbalogan, Western Samar and Bgy. Pinanag-an in Borongan, Eastern Samar respectively. Pump boats are also being constructed to be given to Bgy. Pinanag-an once finished. Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest typhoon to landfall in recent history, killed over 8,000 individuals and destroyed million property and infrastructure in provinces in the islands of Samar, Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Palawan and Panay. United Nation estimates at least 25 million US dollars worth of agricultural damage. CTUHR said that the introduction of farm animals and seeds to chosen areas will help the communities slowly recover from the damages caused by Haiyan while new farm and transport materials such as tractors and pump boats will help increase their yield and income and possibly contribute in the communities’ resilience to typhoons that may hit their areas again in the future.

Apart from rehabilitation, CTUHR also provided the said villages within Samar island with relief goods earlier this year. CTUHR and Task Force Obrero also organized relief operations in a number of worker communities in the provinces of Leyte, Capiz and Ilo-ilo right after the Typhoon Haiyan hit Central Philippines on November 2013.
