Maga is a volunteer staff of national labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU, May First Movement). He also helped the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON), a KMU federation, in organizing its national coordinated protest in early 2018. He was arrested on the morning of February 22, 2018,  while he was playing basketball in San Mateo, Rizal. An arrest warrant was issued against him on the basis of fabricated charges of murder and arson in relation  to an attack of rebel group New People’s Army (NPA) in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Sur. 

The police claimed that while trying to arrest Maga, they found a gun in his possession. Maga was charged with illegal possession of  firearms and ammunition before the San Mateo Regional Trial Court Branch 76. On June 23, 2019, Maga received a “guilty” verdict for the case of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. His camp appealed this decision and he eventually got acquitted on September 18, 2022.  He continues to face murder charges against him and is still currently detained at the Metro Manila District Jail – Annex 4, Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
